Canine Partners of the Rockies (CaPR) currently trains service dogs for people with mobility limiting disabilities and therapy dogs that provide therapeutic intervention under the guidance of a trained caregiver, healthcare worker, therapist or other professional. Our dogs are placed only with Colorado residents.

Service Dogs – Service dogs provide assistance to people with mobility limiting disabilities by assisting with daily tasks such as picking up dropped items, turning on and off lights and opening doors. In addition to providing physical assistance service dog provide social support. A person with a disability accompanied by a service dog has public access and legal protection under the American with Disabilities Act.

Facilitated Service Dogs – Facilitated service dogs assist people with mobility limiting disabilities by performing the same tasks and social support as service dogs, however, these dogs work under the guidance of a facilitator. The facilitator, usually a parent, spouse or caregiver, handles the dog, encourages a strong bond between the dog and its partner and is primarily responsible for the dog’s care and well being. A facilitated service dog team has public access and legal protection under the American with Disabilities Act.

Therapy Dogs – Therapy dogs provide therapeutic intervention to people with disabilities under the guidance of a healthcare professional, physical therapist, speech therapist, special education teacher or other professional. Therapy dogs are used in institutional settings and by private practitioners. These dogs may be allowed to enter facilities (e.g., schools, therapy units), but this is a negotiated agreement between the dog’s facilitator and the administration of the facility. Therapy dogs under the guidance of a parent or other caregiver may be placed in a home (In-Home Therapy Dogs) with a special needs person. A person accompanied by a therapy dog does not have public access or legal protection under the American with Disabilities Act.

If you are a Colorado resident interested in applying for a Service Dog, Facilitated Service Dog or Therapy Dog, please go to the Apply for a Dog link.

Released Dogs – Not all dogs are cut out to be service or therapy dogs. Dogs are released for two reasons – temperament and medical issues. Canine Partners is dedicated to finding other working roles or good forever homes for these dogs. If you would like to adopt a released dog, send an email to info@caninepartnersoftherockies.org and request a Released Dog Application. When a dog is available for adoption, all applications are reviewed to determine the best placement for that particular dog. The adopting person is always told why the dog is being released. The current adoption fee is $1,000.
